A Word's Worth originally started as more a holding-place for memorable quotes (books, movies, conversations), with random musings about books or movies. Evolving into a truer book blog, it now features reviews and reading-related posts. Also featured are writings that the blogger finds relevant, creative, interesting, or simply decides to post.

The year is 1905. It is autumn in the village of Aztec in New Mexico territory. Amanda Dale is burdened with the responsibility of caring for her widowed sister—an invalid--and Ella’s two children—one a premature infant. Schoolteacher Gil Gladney is handsome, intelligent, and God-fearing. He is drawn to Amanda, but feels he cannot propose marriage until he is able to purchase the ranch he has been saving for. When Gil and his pupils discover the relics of an ancient culture among the ruins outside the village, Gil contacts an old college friend. The possibility of an archeological excavation excites the community of cash-strapped farmers, eager to earn extra money working on the site. When a rabid skunk reels through the excavation site, threatening the lives of Amanda and her nephew Rex, Gil realizes that life is short and the possibility of true happiness can be fleeting. In the end, Amanda learns to trust God to provide the happily-ever-after ending she’s been praying for.
Excerpt from Amanda's Beau:
Chapter 1
Village of Aztec,
New Mexico Territory--1905
The baby was nestled snugly inside the large roasting pan. Wrapped in a bit of blue flannel blanket, she reminded Amanda Dale of an oversized tamale. The pan had been set upon the open door of the hot oven so that the premature infant could absorb the life-saving heat. She is so little, Amanda thought with a clutch of fear. She bent over the pan to peer into her niece’s tiny face—a face not much larger than a silver dollar.
“Do you think she’ll die?” 10-year-old Rex asked. Bonita, the large red dog, stood beside him, her long tongue hanging out of her open mouth. Amanda noted the anxiety in her nephew’s voice. She didn’t answer at first. Born almost two months early, the baby had been quite small and barely strong enough to suckle. Tufts of dark hair now sprang from the top of her little head like scraggly sprouts. Her tiny limbs appeared so fragile that Amanda was reluctant to carry the infant without first placing her on a pillow. Ella hadn’t even bothered to name the child yet. When Rex started calling the baby Minnie, Amanda did too. After all, the tiny girl was no bigger than a minute, Gil Gladney had declared the first time he’d seen her.
With a heavy sigh, Amanda shoved thoughts of the handsome schoolteacher, out of her mind and filled the medicine dropper with warm milk. She couldn’t afford to indulge in romantic daydreams. Not this busy September morning. Perhaps not ever.
“Aunt Mandy, is she going to die?” Rex repeated.
“Not if I can help it,” Amanda replied. She gently pressed the tip of the medicine dropper into the baby’s small rosebud mouth. Minnie puckered a bit, trying to suck. Small and feeble, the infant made frail, pitiful sounds like a mewling kitten.
“How is Mama this morning?” Rex asked.
“As well as can be expected,” Amanda replied, shrugging. Glancing at him, she noted the anxiety etched on his young face. Her heart ached for him. He’d endured a lot of grief for one so young. “Your mother is sick in her heart and in her mind. It takes a lot of time to heal in those places.” She did wish Ella would make more of an effort though. Sometimes she had to resist the urge to go in there and shake some sense into her younger sister. Of course, she’d never tell Rex that. Changing the subject, she asked, “Did you feed the chickens?”
“That’s all I ever do--take care of those stupid chickens!” he snapped.
“Watch your tone with me, young man!” Amanda warned.
Rex sighed. “Yes, ma’am. I didn’t mean nothing by it. I fed the chickens and filled the pans with fresh water too.”
“Anything, you didn’t mean anything by it,” she said, correcting his grammar.
He shrugged a shoulder. “ I spend so much time out there, I should move my cot into the chicken house.” With another shrug, he added, “Ozzie Lancaster calls me Chicken Boy.”
Amanda bit her lip and tried not to laugh.
As the corruption of the Society intensifies and the questions surrounding her mother mount, Seraphina Parrish embarks on a journey to find Terease in the terrifying Wandering city of Nocturna. But the information she learns there only sends her team on a dangerous mission to fulfill an ancient prophecy. Delving deep into the disturbing secrets of their world, the revelations quickly unravel, revealing shocking truths about the Society and Sera’s life. In the end, power and courage clash in a mission for freedom that may shatter the Wandering world completely.
I am very happy to be able to share a cover reveal with you today ... a new Austenesque imagining, forthcoming in October ... and I love the cover! What do you think?
In this humorous, topsy-turvy Pride & Prejudice variation, all the gender
roles are reversed. It is Mr. Bennet’s greatest wish to see his five sons
advantageously married. When the haughty Miss Elizabeth Darcy comes to
Netherfield with the Widow Devonport nee Bingley, speculation—and
prejudice—runs rampant.
William Bennet, a
reluctant and irreverent future reverend, catches Miss Darcy’s eye even though
he is beneath her station. However, his opinion of her was fixed when she
slighted him at the Meryton Assembly. As her ardour grows, so does his disdain,
and when she fully expects to receive an offer of marriage, he gives her
something else entirely ….
J. Marie Croft, a Nova
Scotia resident and avid reader all her life, discovered Jane Austen's works
later than others but made up for lost time by devouring the six novels and as
many adaptations and sequels as she could find. In the midst of reading
prodigious amounts of Austen-based fan-fiction, she realized, "Hey, I can
do that." In her spare time, when not working at a music school or on a
wooded trail enjoying her geocaching hobby, she listens to the voices in her
head and captures their thoughts and words in writing. Her stories are
light-hearted; and her motto is Miss Austen's own quote, "Let other pens

Synopsis:
Becca Ward knows that magic is real...
Two years ago not only had she and her best friend Alex found a real-life Sleeping Beauty in the middle of Los Angeles, they also discovered that they were powerful in their own right. They’ve managed to keep both their fae powers and their friend Lilia’s identity as a medieval princess a secret and live a normal life. Now their normalcy is threatened by the return of their former advisor at the Gem and Mineral Museum—and Becca’s least favorite person, Nicholas Hunt.
...and she’s about to find out that more than one fairy tale is true.
Nicholas has been obsessed with proving Lilia’s identity and the existence of magic. While working on an archeology dig he discovered an ancient fae artifact—a mirror that is imbued with a powerful protection spell that twists his obsession, and his body, until he is more beast than man. In order to protect her friends, Becca is forced to help him, and she is surprised to find that in spite of his outward appearance, Nicholas is no longer the beast she remembers. Will she let herself be the beauty that breaks the curse, or will she let her prejudice against him stop her from discovering true love?

Today we have VERY exciting news! We are revealing the title & cover of the third and final book in the Seraphina Parrish Trilogy by Michelle Warren. Who else is super excited??
Hello, hello! It's a beautiful -- but COLD! -- first Friday of spring here, so what could be better than a fun, adorable cover reveal?
Libby Mercer, author of Unmasking Maya (which was totally fun), has another novel coming later this spring, and I've got the cover and blurb for you today.
What
is the universe up to?
Guilty of nothing more than
working too much - or so they say - Adam Stowe is dumped at a "wellness
center" in the middle of nowhere by a couple of concerned colleagues. When
he meets Lorraine, the beautiful and bewitching yoga instructor, his spirits
start to lift, but once he discovers what a flighty fruitcake she is, they drop
back down to subterranean levels.
For Lorraine Jameson, Luna
Wellness Center was a beacon of solace when her life was falling apart, and she
can't stand the way Adam's toxic energy is poisoning the peace. He embodies
everything negative about the life she discarded eighteen months ago. Despite
being fiercely attracted to the arrogant man, she's determined not to let Adam
Stowe anywhere near her heart.
Adam and Lorraine couldn't
be more unsuitable as a potential couple... so why is the universe so dead set
on uniting these two?
The Karmic Connection is a
different kind of love story with a cast of quirky characters and a mystical,
magical New Age-y flavor.
Sounds totally fun, right? And the greens of the cover make me think spring ... happy sigh ...

Hannah Dewmont and Chase
Harper are the perfect pair. With their lives intertwined since
childhood and their love in full bloom, it seems only natural that
they'd make plans for a future together. A future that includes
promises... promises that will prove impossible to keep.
Interested? For a limited time (definitely today and tomorrow, not sure how much longer), Their Promise is available for only 99-cents! Sounds like a great little Valentine's gift for yourself, no? And for your convenience, here's the links for purchase:

Since I've started blogging, my reading tastes have expanded a little, and I've discovered gems of books that I would have passed up otherwise. (I'm also learning that I have a major weakness for book covers that have galactic/space-y images -- you know, stars, galaxies, etc? Awesome!) And of course, I have gotten to participate in all kinds of neat promotional things ... Like today: I get to take part in the big cover reveal for Rhemalda Publishing's upcoming novel Liberty!
Isn't that awesome?! As if the cover didn't catch my attention, here's the blurb:
LIBERTY
is a young adult science fiction novel about a young space captain,
Tabitha Dixon (Dix), who loses her ship and her crew. Dix is forced to
accept the help of a young shipbuilder who runs communication for the
Resistance. As the pair track down the captain's missing crew, a bond
begins to grow between them. However, that bond, along with everything
Dix yearns for, is threatened by her belief that she's destined to kill
anyone who gets close enough to touch.
Yeah, I'm definitely looking forward to this 2013 release! What do you think?
Today I am totally excited to share a Q&A session with the lovely Phillipa Ashley. So kick back, relax, and take a few moments to get to know this rockin' British author!
A Word's Worth (AWW):You have 2 books releasing right now - can you tell
us a little about them? Phillipa Ashley (PA): I have two re-releases out. Just Say Yes is a
romantic comedy which is now available as a US edition. (See my review here). Samhain
has also published Fever Cure in a paperback edition. This is a steamy, sexy
contemporary romance:
The road to heartbreak is paved with honorable
intentions… After a year
dealing with her mum’s health scare and the end of a bad relationship, Keira
Grayson was looking forward to kicking up her heels at her best friend’s
wedding. Until she kicks off her (spare) knickers in front of the trifecta of
perfection. Tom Carew. Son of an earl, honorable doctor and possibly the
hottest man on the planet. One look at
Keira’s delightful embarrassment, and Tom’s hormone meter spins off the charts.
Trouble is, his bags are already packed to return to the jungles of Papua New
Guinea. He has patients waiting—and amends to make for a terrible choice that
left devastation in its wake. They both
reason that indulging in a one-time dinner date won’t hurt…until their inhibitions
melt away in the heat of their lethal sexual chemistry. Leaving Keira wondering
if a sizzling fling is just what the doctor ordered, or another prescription
for relationship disaster. And Tom fighting a battle against inner demons that
could shatter both their hearts.
AWW: And
you've mentioned something about a third book - what do we have to look forward
to? PA: The new book is called Miranda’s
Mount and will be available worldwide from October 4th 2012. It’s actually
my first brand new book since 2011 and my first longer contemporary romance - so
I’m incredibly excited about it. It’s being published as an e book first by
Piatkus Entice who are part of the UK-based Little Brown Group. I’m thrilled to
work with them and they have been very enthusiastic about Miranda’s Mount which
is always a huge help. Miranda is one of those rare
books that was a dream to write: the idea came to me on a long car journey. I
remember saying to my husband and daughter: I know what the next book will be.
I know what the setting is, who the hero and heroine are and why they can’t be
together. As soon as I got home, I started writing it and didn’t stop. My agent
loved it and eventually, I received several offers for it. I wish all books
were like that!
AWW: Does
it get confusing, as an author, to have multiple projects going on at
once? Is it easier to have projects moving at the same pace or at
different points in the process (i.e. both in writing, or one writing and
one editing)? PA: Well,
having books at different stages of production is par for the course as an
author. For instance, right now, I have just finished the final proof checks on
Miranda’s Mount and I’m coming towards the end of writing my 2013 release for
Piatkus Entice. I’ve also been promoting my previous books. It can get quite
tiring and it seems odd to refocus on stories from a few years ago but somehow it
gets done. However, for a couple of months now the promotion of those US books
is over, I plan to focus solely on the current wip which will be a wonderful
luxury.
AWW: Once
you finish a manuscript - or manuscripts - what do you do to 'rest your
brain'? Favorite celebratory activity or fun read? PA: I try to
do anything that involves being outdoors: I go to the health club for a swim or
the gym about 4 or 5 days a week. I also like going for a walk in the country
but my ultimate pleasure is to go bodyboarding in Devon or Cornwall. I’ve had a
few surfing lessons but I still can’t stand up although I’ve used the
experience in Miranda’s Mount where the hero, Jago, is a surfer (as well as
being an Earl.) I always
read the newspapers after a workout; they’re free at the health club and I often
read 2 or 3 different ones. I get ideas for books from there. I read romance,
of course, but I don’t seek out books because they are labelled as a particular
heat level. The idea of avoiding a book because it might be ‘naughty’ seems strange
to me! If I like the author, I read the book and it can be chaste or very very
steamy.
AWW: Do
you have a favorite snack or drink for when you're writing? PA: I do enjoy a biscuit: ginger crinkle crunch for
preference. I used to mainline strong coffee but for health reasons I’ve had to
switch to decaff coffee and tea.
AWW: Where
do you do your best writing? Brainstorming? PA: My most
productive brainstorming locations are when I’m a passenger on a long car
journey and on the exercise bike at the gym! Somehow, I find story ideas and
plot solutions just pop into my mind at these times, often unbidden. I tend to
write best early in the morning and just before dinner.
AWW: What
about your favorite place to read? PA: I do most of my reading in bed and er...
somewhere else I’m too ashamed to admit to... Thanks for having me at A Word’s Worth!
Thanks, Phillipa, for a fun Q&A session! Now I really want to make a batch of gingersnaps ...
Oh man, you guys! I am so excited about today's post! Remember, back in the fall, when I was a stop on the Wander Dust blog tour? If you missed it, check out my Q&A session with Michelle Warren here, and my review of Wander Dusthere. Hopefully they've sparked your interest. If you need a little more convincing, check out the official book trailer:
If you haven't read Wander Dust yet, now's a great time to see what you've been missing. Michelle is running a special until the end of the month:
All of that is fun, right? But here's what I'm really excited about! Michelle has just released the cover and title of Book 2! YES! Sera's story is going to continue, and I am so ready. The teasers are coming soon, but until then, take a look at this cover, would you?
I swoon a little. It's beautiful, and a little mysterious. And I definitely want to know what's going to happen next!
Hello! Today I'm happy to announce I am the first stop of the Rebirth blog tour, sponsored by Lightning Book Promotions. I was all set to offer a review of Dave Longeuay's Rebirth, but technical and postal difficulties have interfered. All is not lost however, because I have a blurb, a trailer, and links!
How did a remnant of scattered Jews rise to build a mighty superpower in the Middle East? Fleeing his father’s anti-Semitic organization, Charles Devonshire journeys into the most volatile landgrab in history—Post WWII Palestine. Charles pursues a beautiful but mysterious librarian, Gladia, who introduces him to the elaborate Jewish underground.
While joining their plight to reestablish a homeland, he falls in love with her and faces painful challenges in developing a relationship within their culture gap. And in the midst of battling the hostile inhabitants who also laid claim to Palestine, he searches for clues of his own troubled past. Can Charles pursue love, uncover his family secrets and avoid being trapped in the middle of the world’s longest feud? Rebirth draws you into 1948, into a world of intrigue, espionage and anti-Semitism. Witness how ancient prophecies were fulfilled against impossible odds as Israel built a nation and defied skeptics. Journey through the precarious events that led to Israel’s miraculous rebirth on May 14, 1948.
Experience the unrelenting pursuits of the most persecuted race, and how their renewed strength reestablished their original language, customs and land cultivations after 2,000 years of desolation—an accomplishment no other nation can claim. Dave Longeuay is a multimedia producer and has been an avid student of prophecy and Israeli biblical history for over two decades.
Pretty awesome sounding, right? As a history major, I took my non-Western world classes in Middle Eastern history, so this one is most definitely on my To Read List.
And if that doesn't catch your attention, how about this trailer:
Now that I've whetted your appetite, check out Dave's site, and don't forget to swing by all the stops on the tour:
Hello, hello! Today I've got something a little different in store for you. One of my favorite things about the blogging world is getting to meet new people and make new friends. Book bloggers are especially friendly, and I've gotten to know other bloggers, authors and publishers through my adventures. It's a lot of fun! And today, I'm featuring an interview with Nicole Langan, the brains behind Tribute Books. I've worked with Nicole before, and love checking out her book blog, so when she emailed asking if I'd host an interview to help spread the word about her new venture, I wholeheartedly agreed!
AWW: Tribute Books is fixing to undergo a pretty big change, and is traveling in a cool direction. Can you tell me a little about how it'll look and work once everything's up-and-running?
Nicole: Well to tell you where we're headed, let me tell you a bit about where we've come from. Tribute Books began in 2004 and we've published over 30 titles since that time. Some of our books have gone on to win awards such as the Christian Small Publisher Book of the Year and the Mom's Choice Award while others were endorsed by PBS and The Thoreau Society. We've covered a wide range of genres from children's picture books to history to sports under both traditional and subsidy contracts. In 2012, Tribute Books will transition into a royalty-paying ebook publisher of young adult titles.
AWW: What made you decide to leave the more traditional route and become an ebook only YA "press"?
Nicole: Over the course of 2011, we've watched our ebook sales outpace our print sales by 2 to 1 due to the explosion in popularity of e-readers such as the Kindle, Nook and iPad. The under $5 price point of most of our e-titles and the ease of purchase and delivery surely facilitated this rapid change.
Overall, our transition is based on three factors. On a business level, the young adult genre sells especially if it is well written and has a paranormal romance theme. On a marketing level, the devotion of the young adult fan base is unparalleled. On a personal level, I thoroughly enjoy a good young adult novel and review many on my blog at http://tributebooksreviews.blogspot.com. I'm a believer in doing what you love and working with like-minded people, when it's at all possible.
AWW: For authors, or author-hopefuls, what should they know about the new look of Tribute Books? Are you open for any YA authors who want to e-pub, or do you have specific genres?
Nicole: Our preference is for damn good writing, the particular topic is secondary in importance. However, books written with a series in mind or those that delve into the paranormal will have a slight edge.
Manuscripts that have already been professionally edited will receive greater consideration. Our preference is to work with authors who have already been published through a royalty-paying press and who know the ins and outs of book promotion. An established social media platform is a must, and we will not consider writers who do not have a well-followed blog, Facebook page or Twitter account.
Interested authors can submit their manuscripts via email to info@tribute-books.com. There will be no charge for the authors we select to work with, and they will receive 50% of the net profits of their ebook sales in quarterly royalty payments. We're looking for Microsoft Word documents with a maximum of 350 pages of text with no photos, charts, illustrations, graphs, etc.
AWW: What excites you most about this new adventure?
Nicole: My hope is that we are able to recruit some talented writers of well-written, well-crafted stories in order to develop an eager fan base for the titles we publish. We want readers to be excited about the ebooks we produce. Young adult authors have the most devoted fan followings out there, and we'd like to introduce that audience to a whole new host of talent.
__________________________________
I don't know about you guys, but I am definitely looking forward to seeing how this develops! Nicole's plan is to work with 12 authors in 2012, publishing one novel a month. Pretty cool, no? So if you are, or know, a YA author who might be interested, let them know! And if you, like me, are an avid read of YA - I think we're fixing to have a great new source for reading material!
Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions, Nicole, and best of luck in this new adventure!
For a few months now, I've been seeing this title and cover popping up in random places. It definitely caught my attention - I mean, look at it! the cover alone is enough to make me want to do a happy dance - and today the wait is finally over! The book is available for purchase! Huzzah!
